CREDO – Their Profit Helps

Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 7:00 pm

This socially aimed company started in the 80s with ideals of helping others with some of their profits. Although I am a stark capitalist, eventually you just don’t need all that money, so why not donate a slice of the green to an organization your consumers (who generate that profit) see as worthy. CREDO is now doing this with their mobile service. A part of the (already low) monthly fee for your cell service goes towards a non-profit such as Greenpeace, Doctors without Borders, and most importantly some green oriented companies. Check them out if you are  thinking about switching carriers. They use Sprint’s towers, much like Helio, and the coverage is excellent.

Thanks to Dave for hooking me up with this link!

Power Shift 2009

Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at 8:22 am

You can register to attend this 4-day major event in D.C. for only $40. Their will be some great speakers and even live performances from some excellent bands, including The Roots!

From February 27th to March 2nd, 2009 young people from across the country will converge on Washington D.C. to take a message of bold, comprehensive and immediate federal climate action to Capitol Hill.  We will leverage the momentum we built locally through the Campus Climate Challenge, at our first national mobilization Power Shift 07, and our electoral engagement campaign Power Vote to pressure our political leaders to take the action our generation and our future demands.

I hope this coming together helps to open the eyes of the public and congress even just another modicum more to how much our generation wants a better and cleaner future. For more info go check out their site Powershift09.org.

Your Neighborhood, Your Opportunity

Thursday, February 5, 2009 at 8:23 am

I thought this would be a worth while email from the WE campaign to spread around as much as possible.

Dear Alex,

The national dialogue on how to get our economy moving again is coming to your neighborhood.

The President is inviting Americans to discuss the economic recovery package and hundreds of house meetings will be held this weekend. With just days before the Senate plans to vote on the recovery package, will you attend a nearby house meeting and build support for green jobs in the recovery?

www.RepowerAmerica.org/RecoveryHouseMeeting

Last week, nearly a hundred thousand We Campaign members like you sent messages to their Senators to support the clean energy projects that are not only shovel-ready but also shovel-worthy.

To build the momentum needed for what Al Gore has called “an important down payment” on repowering America, it’s critical that we talk to our neighbors.

We developed all the materials you need, including a petition that interested attendees can send to their Senators.

Please click here to see if there’s a house meeting near you:

www.RepowerAmerica.org/RecoveryHouseMeeting

Thanks,

Cathy Zoi
CEO
RepowerAmerica.org

Take action, see the change, enjoy the future you’ll create.

Al Gore & PowerVote – Webcast on Energy and the Election

Thursday, October 30, 2008 at 1:58 am

In case you missed the webcast last night I have outlined the discussion and Q&A from the thirty minute segment with Al Gore and the leader of PowerVote.org.

The webcast began with a brief intro made up of sound bytes and video clips of Gore’s past speeches (notably the Challenge Speech). It focused on the global climate projections made by the IPCC, the reliance on fossil fuels, and the lack of anything but baby steps in the right direction by the government. We were reminded that JFK made a promise in 1961 to put a man on the moon and bring him back safely in 10 years, but instead we did it in 8. The video ended by showing us that this new goal will change civilization as we know it and will keep it open for a bright future.

An important email from 1Sky.org

Please RSVP for this important online event here:

http://www.powervote.org/gore

During the webcast, Gore will speak about the connection between energy, climate and the economic crisis, why this election is so important to our push for bold climate action, and what we can do to get out the climate vote.

Here are the details:

  • WHAT: Al Gore webcast on climate change and the 2008 election
  • WHEN: Wednesday, October 29th, 2008
    5:30 pm Pacific / 6:30 pm Mountain / 7:30 pm Central / 8: 30 pm Eastern
  • RSVP: http://www.powervote.org/gore

We need our leaders to know there are millions of voters for whom climate is a top priority. That’s why 1Sky is partnering with the Energy Action Coalition and the We Campaign to spread the word about this event and support their get-out-the-vote efforts. This webcast will be a powerful tool to motivate climate voters to turn out in greater numbers than ever before.

Please RSVP today to watch Al Gore’s webcast and share this email with all your contacts:

http://www.powervote.org/gore

On behalf of the 1Sky team,

Liz Butler

Quickie about Quickies?

Sunday, October 26, 2008 at 10:55 pm

That’s right, even sex can be green! I know it is a bit strange and probably might make some uncomfortable, but that is what science is all about! Forget taboo and just be smart!

Stumbled across this one while I was looking through the Planet Green website; How to Go Green: Sex. As I said, it may be a bit strange to think about, but even America’s favorite (private) pass-time can be a great target for those who wish to truly make all aspects of their life green! Check out their tips on how to find safer and cleaner lube, condoms, and whatever else!

Since this site has been pretty PG so far, I advise only the “experienced” and “mature” to go on reading. There is nothing profane, of course, but it may be a touchy subject for younger readers.

Crunch Time

Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 9:12 am

WeCanSolveIt.org created a great ad a while back and is trying to get ABC to run it during 20/20. So far they’ve failed to convince them enough people see it as important. Help them convince ABC to run the ad and inform more people about the problems we face.

Along similar lines, I recieved an email recently from GreenJobsNow that contained a great message about clean coal that needs to be spread to the media and public so that ignorance does not continue. The following are the contents of the entire email. Spread it to your friends, family, anyone, help keep people aware of the issues.

Who Can You Trust with Your Land?

Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at 1:43 pm

For over 25 years the Land Trust Alliance has been the champion of conservation land management and acquisition. This group made up of hundreds of local advocates for better conservation policy and development criterion, has provided large interest groups (ranging from towns to entire states) as well as individuals with better options for their land and it’s future than simply selling it to developers.

Annie Leonard’s The Story of Stuff

Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at 6:15 am

Brought to my attention by Leah D. via facebook, this epic journey through the production line tells of the dark truth behind how much our country consumes and simply, throws away. The video on her home page is about 20 minutes long but worth every second. Annie puts in simple terms the linear path of resources as they travel from ravaged lands to toxic pumping factories through underpaid retailer hands, into our homes only to have 99% of those things thrown out within 6 months of them arriving. One of the things she brings up is something known as “planned obsolescence” which everyone should be wary of in order to be a wise consumer, so pay close attention.

I really enjoyed this video and since she has it layed out so well, I’ll leave the rest of the talking to Annie. You can find a bunch more info on her site, so explore it after you watch the video!
