Rotten Food is Good Dirt

Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at 1:19 pm

This whole green thing is not always about recycling plastic and paper, it’s about recycling everything! If you’ve never tried it you should. If you have a garden you won’t believe the improvement. If you don’t know what it is, go read about it here or here.

Composting is essentially the practice of accumulating scraps of rapidly biodegradable waste (usually food like; egg shells, fruit rinds, coffee grounds, and other vegetable scraps) into a pile underneath a dark container designed to absorb and contain heat to kill bacteria. Eventually this “mash” can be used as extremely rich fertilizer for any application.

How to Compost.org provides a great resource for those looking to get into the practice. Since it is the season, they even have a great bit about giant pumpkin growing, which of course, was only possible with great compost! Even National Geographic has gotten in on the stinky mess with their Green Guide – Compost Tools section.

Climate Change: Avian Impact

Sunday, September 28, 2008 at 11:39 am

Though the future amplification rates of global climate change effects are debated among many the past effects are quite clear. Most birds are migratory, which means they change latitudes and climates to breed or find food, seasonally. Though many perceive their journey as trivial it is a very complicated and dangerous one. Each individual must prepare adequate amounts of fat, reorganize their internal organs’ sizes to avoid extra weight, all while retaining the ability to find their way on their non-stop or several-stop route. These long flights aren’t always taken at the leisurely height of 1500 ft, some birds will fly up to 20,000 ft in order to avoid drag. To get to such a height the birds will expend a good amount of energy and simply hope to drift the rest of the way, many won’t make it. Because migration is so integral to nearly 95% of speicies that live between 40° and 50° N latitude, changing climates can cause great commotions, even on an annual basis. During an El Niño in 1982 and 1983, abrupt ocean current changes and heavy flooding caused complete reproductive failure, adult mortality, and the disappearance of entire seabird community on Christmas Island.[1],[2]
